| TUCSON HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOODS Tucson has a rich history that has left neighborhoods rich in charm and character. FORT LOWELL HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOOD: Camp Lowell was originally located in the area of 4th Ave and 13th St. In 1872 the growing camp was relocated to the area along the Rillito River and the Pantano Wash. It was designated a fort in 1879. The primary purpose of the fort was to protect the citizens of Tucson from the Apaches. By 1891 the Apache Indians were no longer a threat and Fort Lowell was abandoned. Many of the adobe structures still stand and are privately owned. BARRIO LIBRE (FREE NEIGHBORHOOD): This is an area of downtown Tucson that in the 1800's was left alone by the law, thus the term "free" neighborhood. Many of the original adobes still stand and have been renovated into private offices. HISTORY OF BARRIO HISTORICO (AKA TUCSON'S BARRIO LIBRE). ARMORY PARK HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOOD: This neighborhood was developed in the 1850's through the 1940's by the affluent and working class citizens of Tucson. This was a period of architectural transition of Anglo-American, Queen Ann, Vicorian and Spanish/Mexican. Wooden roofs and porches were added to the typical adobe. WEST UNIVERSITY NEIGHBORHOOD: Is a neighborhood that reflects many architectural styles from 1875 to 1949 such as bungalows, Prairie School, Mission/Spanish revival and victorian. PIE ALLEN HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOOD: is near Tucson High. It is named after John Bracket Allen who was nicknamed "Pie" because he sold apple pies. Allen laid claim to the railroad area for the railroad workers. These homes are mud adobe and territorial brick built in the 1850's through 1949. THE DOWNTOWN ARTS DISTRICT: This area has historic hotels, theatres and stores many of which are being restored with the Rio Nuevo downtown revitalization project. This area's history is rich with characters such as Wyatt Earp and John Dillenger. EL PRESIDIO HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOOD: This neighborhood has some of the oldest homes in Tucson built around 1850 to 1924 in the Prairie School, Mission/Spanish revival and Bungalow style. Some of the grandest homes were built in the early 1900's. EL PRESIDIO HISTORIC HOMES: View homes like; J. Knox Corbett House, Edward Nye Fish House, Stevens House, La Casa Cordova House , Sam Hughes House, Kruttschnitt House, Steinfeld House, Owl's Club, Rosalia Verdugo House, and Romero House. TUCSON MUSEUM OF ART calls the El Presidio Historic Neighborhood home. The El Presidio District also has the OLD TOWN ARTISANS which is housed on the historical site of the El Presidio San Augustin Del Tucson. The buildings were the stables for the Spanish fort that ws built in 1775. The current buildings were constructed in the 1850's and now house shops selling traditional and contemporary arts and crafts as well as jewelry, home decor and clothing from local artists. IRON HORSE EXPANSION: Built 1875 to 1949 in the Queen Ann and Caftsman Bungalow styles. EL ENCANTO ESTATES: Built 1925 to 1949 in the modern movement and 19th & 20th century revival. . COLONIA SOLANA: Built in 1925 to 1949 in the Mission/Spanish revival and Pueblo styles. SPEEDWAY-DRACHMAN: Built 1900 to 1949 in the Craftsman Bungalow and Mission/Spanish revival style. SAM HUGHES: Built in 1900 to 1949 in the Craftsman Bungalow, Tudor Revival, and Mission/Spanish Revival style. WAREHOUSE DISTRICT: Built in 1900 to 1949 in the Italianate, Mission/Spanish Revival styles. EL MONTEVIDEO: Built in 1925 to 1950 in the Modern Movement, late 19th Century Revival. INDIAN HOUSE: Built in 1925 to 1950 in the Pueblo style. BLENMAN-ELM: Built in 1925 to 1949 in the Craftsman Bungalow and Tudor Revival styles.
