| SAM HUGHES HOUSE EL PRESIDIO HISTORIC DISTRICT 223 N. MAIN AVE ![]() (Photo by Julie Nellis 2-27-2005) In 1862 this home was just a small adobe building at the corner of Main and Washington when Sam Hughes moved his new wife, Atanacia Santa Cruz, the sister to Petra Stevens, into it. Sam Hughes was thirty-one to his wife's twelve years of age. As their family grew, they had fifteen childen, so did the house. They were married for over fifty years. Today it is a series of garden apartments. Sam Hughes emigrated to Pennsylvania from Wales in 1837. After being injured in a mining accident in California, Hughes moved to Tucson for it's healing climate. Sam Hughes served as an alderman for seven years, he helped start the first bank in Tucson and helped form the city of Tucson. For more history about Sam Hughes and the Sam Hughes house Click Here.
