| BIRD CAGE THEATRE Built in 1881 by William Hutchinson, the Bird Cage Theatre was a Saloon/theatre. Balcony boxes run down the length of both sides of the large room. Singing girls were to distribute drinks to the boxes, thus the name Bird Cage. The Bird Cage was the most popular establishment of its kind. No matter how hard it tried to gain respectability, it never did. No "proper" person would even consider setting foot in that den of iniquity that was open 24 hours of the day. The Bird Cage changed hands in 1886. The new owner´s, Joe and Minnie Bignon, provided their clientele with dramatic performances as well as song and dance, comedy, magicians, quick change artists and India Rubber Men. By 1892 The Bird Cage became to expensive to operate so the doors were closed in July never to open again to the bawdy lawless crowds. Over 140 bullet holes have been counted in the walls of the Bird Cage. Links to more Bird Cage information; Southwest Ghost Hunters Association |
