TOMBSTONE'S OLD COURTHOUSE

                      TOMBSTONE´S OLD COURTHOUSE

As Tombstone and the surrounding area grew it became evident that it needed law and order.  In 1882 the Cochise County Courthouse was built at the cost of $50,000.  The Courthouse housed a courtroom, jail and the offices for the sheriff, recorder, treasurer, attorney, court clerk, Board of Supervisors, and assessor.

In 1912 Arizona became the 48th state of the United States of America and the county seat for Cochise County was moved to Bisbee in 1931. The courthouse was vacant until 1955 when the Tombstone Restoration Commission acquired it and has developed into a history museum as an Arizona State Historic Park since 1959.

Today the Courthouse houses exhibits on the shoot out between the Earps and Clanton gang, mining and ranching life, and a complete 1880´s courtroom.
