TOMBSTONE ARIZONA

TOMBSTONE
, ARIZONA

Tombstone, Arizona, also known as "The Town Too Tough To Die", hasn´t died but many have met violent deaths within its city limits.  Who hasn´t heard of the famous Earp brothers, their friend Doc Holliday and the shoot out at the OK Corral?  This small town is big in Wild West history.  Walk on the wooden sidewalks and listen to the echo of the footsteps of the ghosts that once tread the same path as live beings.  Some of these ghosts met violent deaths while young but others lived long productive lives.  Everyone that visits Tombstone agrees that they have been transported to the days of horses, guns, and tough living.

In 1877 Ed Schieffelin was traveling through Apache domain with the U.S. Cavalry when he decided to take to the hills in search of wealth. The soldiers told Scheiffelin that all he would find would be Apaches, rattlesnakes, dust and his tombstone.  The soldiers´ prediction of Schieffelin finding his tombstone was accurate but not as they had meant.  Schieffelin found a rich ledge of silver that became the Tombstone and Graveyard claims. Soon followed the Lucky Cuss, Toughnut, Contention and Grand Central stakes which produced millions of dollars in silver.

In no time at all the area boomed with miners looking for their fortune. By 1879 permanent buildings were taking the place of canvas tents.  Housing grew, as did stores, laundries, schools, and churches.  To entertain the miners and cowboys, saloons, gaming houses and houses of "Soiled Doves" also grew in number.  Soon Tombstone became known for its lawlessness.

Enter the colorful characters like lawmen; Wyatt, Virgil, and Morgan Earp, Fred White, Johnny Behan, and Charles Shibell; rough and ready cowboys like; Ike and Billy Clanton, Tom and Frank McLowery, Curly Bill Brocius, Johnny Ringo, Billy Claibourne, Frank Stillwell; and other players such as; Doc Holliday, Big Nose Kate, Camillus S. Fly, Josephine Marcus, John Clum,  Judge Wells Spicer, Justice Jim Burnett, Bob Paul, Nellie Cashman, Warren Earp, Doc George Goodfellow, Allen English, Joe & Minnie Bignon and oh, so many more.  Many of these characters are buried in Tombstone's Boothill.

Visit the places that stood while these people walked Tombstone's streets.  Place like: The Bird Cage Theatre, Crystal Palace Saloon, the Old Courthouse, Aztect House, Schieffelin Hall, Big Nose Kate's Saloon, the OK Corral, and St. Paul's.
