TOMBSTONE'S ST. PAUL'S

ST. PAUL´S EPISCOPAL CHURCH
Tombstone´s St. Paul´s Church is the oldest protestant church in Arizona still standing and being used for the purpose that it was built for. This beautiful adobe church at the corner of third and Safford Streets was built in 1882 on land acquired from the Arizona Trading Company. Up until 1882 Tombstone´s faithful met in tents, parlors or school rooms to worship.
The first minister to this wayward flock was Endicott Peabody. Peabody was born in Salem, Massechuesetts in 1857. He moved to England with his family at the age of thirteen and was a graduate from Trinity College, Cambridge. Peabody was a positive influence on the town. He organized a town baseball team and he played the part of referee. He even agreed to Sunday games as long as the team attended Church before the game.
To help raise funds for the construction of St. Paul´s, Peabody would pass the hat at big gambling games. The faithful worked hard to build the new church. The parish men made adobe bricks and hauled timber from the Chiricahua Mountains.
The original bell tower was struck by lightening and was replaced by a brick belfry.
