These amphibians can present a real threat to dogs because of their poisonous skin.  If swallowed, the result may be fatal.  The toad evades drought by remaining underground and resurfacing briefly during monsoon season (July to September).  Dogs should not wander in toad inhabited areas such as riverbeds.
