COYOTE The Coyote is found throughout the southwest and is one of the most adaptable animals in the world. It is a member of the dog family and is about 20 pounds. The Desert Coyotes are light tan with a black tipped tail. Coyotes have incredible hearing and use the position of their ears to communicate their mood or rank. They also have a keen sense of smell to detect prey or other Coyotes. Coyotes can travel alone, in pairs or in packs. They walk with only their toes touching the ground and can run up to 40 mph. They mark their territory with urine. January through March is Coyote mating season. In two months litters of 3 to 9 pups are born in dens which are usually hidden from view in a rocky ledge. Even though Coyotes have a life span of 15 years, only 5-20% of the pups survive their first year.
Coyotes have a varied diet and seem to exist on whatever the area has to offer. Their typical diet is small mammals, insects, reptiles, fruit and berries of wild plants. As humans expand their living areas, contact with coyotes is inevitable. Coyotes go out of their way to avoid humans, but some humans feed them so the coyotes take advantage of this food source. Because of this, we are seeing a bolder change of their behavior.
