COATI

The Coati call rocky niches in desert canyons home.

The Coati is a raccoon-like carnivore with a long snout with a white tip and white around the eyes.  It has small ears, dark feet and a long banded tail. Coati are grayish-brown in color and can weigh from 10 to 25 pounds (the males being about twice as large as females).

Coatis are noisy creatures with insatiable appetites.  They travel in groups from 6 to 24 while spending the day foraging for food such as; fruits, roots, lizards, insects, eggs and nuts. They really like manzanita berries.

They mate in early spring and have a littler of 4 to 6 babies after about 11 weeks.  It is up to the female to educate and feed the young until they are ready to go off on their own.
