TYPES OF CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL
                      IN TUCSON REAL ESTATE

ADOBE:  Adobe comes from the Arabic word "atobe" which means sticky glob or muck.  Adobe bricks are made from a yellow silt or clay deposited by river.  Straw is sometimes added to strengthen the bricks.  The major benefits of using adobe are low sound transmission, great insulate, availability, solidity and fire protection.  There are two kinds of pressed adobe brick: natural and semistablized.  Semistabilized adobe contains Portland cement.

BRICK:  Brick is a rectangular block of clay hardened by drying in the sun or burning in a kiln and used for building or paving.

CONCRETE:
Concrete is a stone-like building material made by mixing various aggregates , such as sand or gravel with water and allowing the mixture to harden.

CONCRETE BLOCK:  Blocks made with concrete.

FRAMED STUCCO:  Wooden walls covered with tar paper or insulation board and chicken wire or galvanized metal screening and then covered with the stucco mixture either by hand or spray.

MASONRY STUCCO:
Masonry walls that have covered over with stucco.

RAMMED EARTH:  Rammed Earth is a mixture of slightly damp, sifted earth and a small amount of cement.  This mixture is tamped under pressure into wooden or metal wall forms.  Once the forms are tamped full the builder moves them up the wall to construct the next layers.  Rammed Earth wall continue to harden or cure during the first year after construction and will last at least 100 years.  The walls can be stuccoed, plastered, painted, or left natural and sealed.  Like adobe, rammed earth is not cheap and very labor intensive.

SLUMP BLOCK:
Slump blocks are intentionally distorted during the manufacturing process to simulate the appearance of old adobe bricks.  The rustic, rounded appearance of slump block is produced by utilizing a wetter than normal mixture that is subjected to an additional compression immediately upon ejection from the mold.  Slump blocks vary in height from 4" to 6" and in widths from 4" up to 12".

STUCCO:  Stucco is a cement mixture used for siding, usualy on Southwest style homes.  The cement is combined with water and inert materials such as sand and lime.
